 Basic understanding

 The different variations of poker
1. Hold’Em
Most common in on-line poker games.
The players are dealt hole cards that are known only to them. The hole cards are then combined with a number of community cards that are used by all players.

2. Stud games
No community cards are used. Some cards are visible to all players and others are not.

3. Draw games
The old-fashioned poker game.
No community cards are used. No cards are visible to other players.

 Limit / No limit / Pot limit
1. Fixed limit
Most common in on-line poker games.
The amount of the bet on each particular round is pre-set.

2. No limit
The player may bet any amount of chips (up to the number in front of him) whenever it is his turn to act.

3. Pot limit (often used in Omaha)
The player may bet up to the amount of money in the pot whenever it is his turn to act.

4. Spread limit
The player may bet any amount in a pre-set range on every betting round.

 Kind of games
1. Ring game
A regular poker game as opposed to a tournament.

2. Tournament
A competition.

 Different cards
1. Hole cards / Hand / Pocket cards
Your personal cards, only seen by yourself.

2. Community cards
The cards that are dealt face up and are shared between all players.

 Items on the table
1. Button
A white acrylic disk to indicate who is the (nominal) dealer.

2. Blind
A forced bet (or partial bet) put in by one or more players before any cards are dealt. Typically, blinds are put in by players immediately to the left of the button.

3. Pot
The total of all the chips in the centre of the table.

1. Folding
To throw a hand away and and not take any further part in the game.

2. Betting
The act of placing a wager into the pot.

3. Calling
When a player chooses to match the previous bet.

4. Raising
To increase the amount of the current bet.

5. Checking
To not bet, with the option to call or raise later in the betting round.

6. Showdown
The end of the game when it’s determined who has the best hand, i.e. who’s winning.
 The outcomes of a game
1. Winning
The person with the best hand is winning the pot.

2. Folding
To throw a hand away and and not take any further part in the game.

3. Split pot
When a player chooses to match the previous bet.

4. Raising
A pot which is shared by two or more players because they have equivalent hands.

5. Muck
You didn’t win. You throw your cards in without showing them to anyone.

 Essential poker terms
1. Rake
An amount of money taken out of every pot by the dealer.

2. Buy-in
The minimum amount of money required to enter any game.

3. All-in
To run out of chips while betting or calling.

4. Table Stakes
A rule in a Poker game meaning that a player may not go into his pocket for money during a hand.

5. Side pot
A pot created in which a player has no interest because he has run out of chips.

 Cool poker lingo
1. Bad beat
You have a really good hand, but are still beaten by a much better hand.

2. Fish
A player with poor poker skills that makes a lot of obvious mistakes.

3. Kicker
The high card that goes with a pair or two pair.

4. Nuts
The best possible hand in any one game.

5. Tilt
To play wildly or recklessly.

 How to get started

1. Decide what poker room
We recommend you to check out our 10-top-list. Or choose one of the rooms listed in our step-by-step guide above.

2. Download the software
You find the link to the download-page on the 10-top-list or on the review page.

3. Register on the site
Simply follow the instructions that are coming with the download (or look in our step-by-step guide above).

4.Buy chips
Follow the instructions at the Cashier (or look in our step-by-step guide above).

Don’t play with Play money! (on mouse over the following text appear: Some sites allow you to play with Play money. However this is not recommended since the game could be as or more fictional as the money. It's not real money, hence many people are not consider the real risks etc. It's therefore reommended that you start with real money, but choose a table with very small stakes instead.)

Now you've got the cash, it's time to play. Don't worry, it isn't difficult.
There're clear signs when to play, how to play and what options that are available.


5. Choose what game to play
We recommend that you start with No Limit since its more intuativ. People are betting more and therefore it's easier to understand when it's better to call/bet/fold/check.

6. Choose a table
Find a table with an open seat, or put yourself in the waiting line

7. Get a seat at the table.
Click on the open seat. There's usually a pop-up window asking you how much you want to play. Keep it simple: I usually go for what they propose.

8. START playing!!
If you want to add money, just click on the dealer/pot.
